Pet Grooming Products – Shampoos, Clippers And Combs

There’s nothing like a well groomed pet that looks good and has that fresh smell. Shampoos, conditioners, combs and brushes are the basic pet grooming products needed to accomplish this task. Clippers and trimmers will make your family pet’s coat look beautiful. Nail trimmers and nail files will keep those claws under control.

Brushes and Combs

Considering the number of pet lovers out there, grooming supplies are massive sellers. These products are not only purchased by professional pet groomers, but also by those of us who want to perform grooming on our own pets. A variety of brushes and combs are available for the different types of hair coats. You can get soft bristle brushes, wire brushes, wide tooth combs, fine tooth combs, along with an endless variety of tools that will help demat your pet’s coat.

Have you seen or heard of the “Furminator”? It may sound like an intimidating tool, but it’s great and it works. It looks kind of like a huge clipper blade situated on a rubber coated handle. If you have a dog that sheds continuously, this tool works wonders. Dogs that are double coated or tripled coated will really benefit from the “Furminator”. You not only will have less hair in your house, but you’ll help remove all the “dead” hair from your dog which will help relieve itching.

Shampoos

The variety of pet shampoos available is enormous. There are shampoos that are hypo allergenic that have an oatmeal base for the extremely sensitive family pet. Of course you can find shampoos that will generally kill any fleas on your pet. Of course, some of the flea shampoos only appear to stun the fleas. Just about everyone has probably seen the resurrected fleas start hopping around when we thought they were all dead from the shampooing. Once your family pet has been dried after his bath, use a flea preparation that is designed to keep fleas off of him.

Shampoos don’t really keep fleas off, they just kill any fleas that are currently on your dog. Conditioners are great for the family pet that has long hair. Running a comb through hair is much easier whenever the coat is free of tangles. No dog or cat likes to have a comb yanked through their coat or hair pulling as you use a comb to try and remove tangles. Having to put up with a bath is bad enough.

Nail Care

Nail ClippersNail clippers are a must grooming tool to own. They come in numerous sizes and you can find very tiny curved ones that are only for use on cats. Always remember that there is a considerable difference between dog and cat nails.

Have you seen the commercials on television about the “Pedipaws” for nail care? It really sounds like a good idea and you don’t have to worry about clipping the quick on the family pet’s nails. There is a tiny cylindrical sandpaper attached to the unit to file the nails. You insert your pet’s nail within the tiny hole and start sanding away.

If you’re considering one of these tools, there are some points that you might want to think about. Several pets never like having their nails sanded. It will take lots of patience and time to get your family pet to tolerate this device. It can be relatively quiet when operating, but some pets don’t like the sound. Another point to keep in mind is that the nail will heat up while sanding, so do short sanding sessions on each nail.

Cleaning Powders and Wipes

If you have a pet that is fearful of baths, you can find powders and wipes developed for quickie and easy clean ups. The powders do help clean and freshen the coat for those in between bath periods. The wipes are great for cleaning muddy paws. Older pets may be kept fresh even in cold weather using a dry shampoo. Merely sprinkle the powder on the coat and brush thoroughly.

Cats will even tolerate this far better than a normal bath. Cats normally do pretty a pretty good job of grooming themselves, but some older or overweight cats will need a little help to keep themselves clean. A quality comb works quite nicely on their rear area for those who can’t reach that part of their body after using the litter box.

Grooming Accessories

If you like to adorn your pets with accessories after they have been groomed, there are numerous bows and frilly hair bands that you can buy for your dear pet. Of course, you probably wouldn’t want to use frilly hair items on your male dog, but something like a bandana might be nice.

You can even find colognes that you can spritz on your pet’s coat to give them that special smell or maybe you would prefer one of the many unscented coat refreshers, which are great at getting rid of that “doggy” smell.

With all the pet grooming products available, you could easily spend quite a bit of money on grooming supplies. Keep in mind that many of the products are marketed with the owner in mind and may not be very beneficial for your pet.
