Dog and Cat Grooming Cost

How Much Would You Have to Spend for Professional Pet Grooming?

When you decide to add a pet to your family, there are several things that you should consider. Besides the cost of buying a pet or the adoption fee, if you decide to adopt, you have costs such as vet fees, food, treats, toys and other accessories. If you decide to handle the grooming yourself, then you would need items such as pet shampoo, conditioner, nail clippers and other grooming items. Grooming is an important part of maintaining your pet’s health. Basic grooming such as brushing and bathing helps keep the skin and coat healthy and your pet free of parasites.

Basic pet grooming can be done at home, but it does take a little time and needs to be done regularly. If you have a busy lifestyle, you may not have the necessary time to perform these grooming tasks on a regular basis. Maybe you’ve chosen one of the many purebred or mixed breed dogs that require regular haircuts. Basic grooming is one thing, but performing regular haircuts might get rather interesting. If your pet does require regular haircuts, you might want to consider the services of a professional groomer.

Charges for grooming services vary from place to place and it even varies by region. If you live in a large city, grooming services will probably be higher than if you lived in a medium size city. Even though you will have to pay for the service, professional groomers know what they are doing and can make your life easier. Just give them a call and schedule your dog’s appointment letting the groomer know what services that you want performed. If you have a long haired cat, you may want to make an appointment for them too.

Pet Grooming CostsFor a basic, uncomplicated haircut for a small to medium size dog, the cost can run from $30 to $50. Of course, the larger the dog, the higher the grooming cost. Short haired breeds grooming cost run around $50 to $75. Large dogs with thick coats such as “double coats” or “triple coats” may cost anywhere from $70 to $90. What services are included for these fees? A typical grooming service involves a bath, nail trimming, ear cleaning, comb out and minimal clipping. You don’t have to have all of these services performed, just select the ones that you want. For example, if you just want nail trimming, that usually runs around $10.

Besides the basic grooming services, add ons are available. Add on services would include dematting, skunk baths, flea treaments and teeth cleaning. Depending on the add on, the additional cost will be from $5 to $30 each. Now, if you would rather have the grooming service provider come to you, such as a mobile groomer, the charges are about $10 to $15 more. Of course, that additional $15 for a mobile groomer might be worth the cost if it is a hassle to get your pet to the groomer’s salon.

If the cost for professional grooming services seems too much, there are a couple of other options. There are the “do it yourself” dog washes. These charge around $12 to $15 if you bring your own grooming supplies, such as shampoo, conditioner and brush. They provide the “tub” and water and a doggie proof environment for wet dogs. Just think, you don’t have to worry about making a mess in your home’s bathroom. Another option is to learn to do the grooming yourself through books and videos at a cost of around $25. If you have a dog that requires regular haircuts, you can get clippers for $50 to $150.

Whether you decide to use a professional groomer on a regular basis or do the grooming yourself, your pets will benefit from the grooming. Also, keep in mind that if your dog doesn’t require regular haircuts, you can use a professional groomer occasionally. You know, maybe one of those special occasions, either for your dog or yourself.
